A Story That Began in the 13th Century

The Castle

One Place, a Thousand Stories: Medieval Charm and Timeless Atmosphere

Dating back to the 13th century, Castello di Cisterna overlooks the Umbrian countryside, offering beautiful panoramic views.
The apartments feature rustic furnishings and original details, creating an authentic and welcoming atmosphere.
Surrounded by tranquillity, the castle is an ideal retreat for rest, contemplation and artistic pursuits.

The Castle: A History of War and Strategy

The present-day castle complex dates back to around 1200, following the destruction of the original fortified settlement, known as Cisterna Vecchia, by the troops of Frederick Barbarossa as they advanced towards Spoleto.
The remains of the original castle, including its moat, can still be seen along the Puglia stream. Over time, Cisterna came under the protection of the Trinci, the ruling family of Foligno, who used it as a strategic refuge during numerous military campaigns.

From the Old Castle to the Present-Day Fortress

From the 17th century onwards, the castle passed through the hands of several noble Umbrian families, including the Baglioni and the Bennicelli, before coming under the jurisdiction of the Archbishopric of Todi, which continued to oversee its preservation until 1980.

The present-day complex comprises the central keep, the defensive walls and a square tower standing approximately 15 metres tall, around which a small residential settlement developed. Several surviving architectural features date back to the 17th century and the early 20th century.

Hospitality

Authentic Hospitality, Passion and Attention to Detail

I am Antonio Lorusso, a recently retired professor of Rural Construction at the University of Perugia. During my scientific research in the local area, I fell in love with the small 13th-century Castle of Cisterna, which had been abandoned and was in a state of considerable disrepair, with many sections having collapsed. I acquired the property from the Diocese of Todi in several successive stages. Over the past ten years, following extensive historical research and careful analysis, I have completed the restoration of the castle, preserving its historical character and respecting its original materials. I have created a collection of charming apartments designed to host artistic activities, holiday stays and longer-term visits. My foremost aim is to bring this place, rich in history and emotion, back to life and share its unique spirit with future guests.
